  • This article will guide you on how to add more RAM to a 17-inch iMac. On a 17-inch iMac, you can either install new memory in the bottom slot or replace the existing memory in the top slot.

    Bottom Slot

    To install memory in the bottom slot:

    1. Shut down your iMac and plug out all cables.
    2. Put a clean cloth on a smooth surface and lay the iMac face down on this cloth.
    3. With a Phillips screwdriver, remove the RAM compartment door on the bottom of the computer.
    4. Place the DIMM ejector clips to a fully open position.
    5. Insert a memory module into the bottom slot and don’t forget to orient in correct direction.
    6. Push the DIMM up into the slot with your thumbs until you hear a click sound. Don’t use the ejector clips to push in the memory module, as this might damage it.
    7. Close the ejector clips and put back the RAM compartment door.
    8. Return the iMac to the upright position.
    9. Plug in all the cables and turn on the computer.

    Top Slot

    To replace memory in the top slot:

    1. Shut down your iMac and plug out all cables.
    2. Put a clean cloth on a smooth surface and lay the iMac face down on this cloth.
    3. With a Phillips screwdriver, remove the RAM compartment door on the bottom of the computer.
    4. Pull the two levers on each side of the memory compartment to eject the DIMM.
    5. Remove the memory module from your iMac.
    6. Insert the memory module into the top slot and don’t forget to orient in correct direction.
    7. Push the DIMM up into the slot with your thumbs until you hear a click sound. Don’t use the ejector clips to push in the memory module, as this might damage it.
    8. Close the ejector clips and put back the RAM compartment door.
    9. Return the iMac to the upright position.
    10. Plug in all the cables and turn on the computer.
